NETFLIX Creative Production - Japanese Linguist & Annotations Editor Yukiko Arkin Q1. What is your occupation? I am an editor and a translator for subtitles for movies, dramas, animation, documentaries and reality shows. I work for the NETFLIX creative production team and am in charge of editing mostly Japanese media and quality control. Last year, I launched Nozomi Design Studio, which is a brand for handmade masks as my side business and sell them at Mitsuwa Plano and a local coffee shop. Q2. What is the most rewarding part of your work? I feel rewarded when audiences enjoy foreign media with subtitles that I created, so that they are able to have opportunities to listen to original languages. We are delivering excellent Japanese media to worldwide audiences through a streaming service. It is truly rewarding to be involved in media and advanced IT which enable our audience to have borderless and new viewing experiences. Q3. On the other hand, what are the difficult parts of your work? Editing media and subtitle creation is based on "24-30 frames per second", and I need to pay attention to a lot of details. It is required to understand context and the directors' intention of their work, and to research to make sure subtitles are accurate. The deadlines of work tend to be short, and sometimes it is difficult to maintain work-life balance as a mother of two children. Q4. Is there something new that you would like to try, either for your work or private life? I would like to start playing golf as there will be a PGA golf course in Frisco. I think this is a good opportunity.

DJCW Director of Working Mothers' Group Noriko Nakane Danh Q1. Who motivated you to pursue your long-term career? My parents were always supportive of me to try different things. My father always encouraged me to keep learning and to broaden my possibilities of accomplishing my goals and finding purpose. With the full support from my parents, I wanted to contribute as much as I could to society based on my experience and competencies that I gained through the different challenges I encountered. Q2. What made you decide to come to the United States? Since I started learning English as 6th grader, I fell in love with the English language! I went to high school also known as having an intensive English program in Japan and joined their exchange program to study in a public school in Ada, Oklahoma. After studying in Oklahoma for a semester, I went back to Japan and graduated from high school and came back to Oklahoma for college education and the rest is history! Q3. How would you like to develop DJCW? I want DJCW to be a platform for Japanese women who work in the U.S. to be able to share different topics and challenges through their unique experiences and support each other with their comfortable languages, “Japanglish”- mix of English and Japanese! As a leader of Working Mother’s Group, I would like to create a friendly co-supporting group and hope this group will help each working mom to enjoy this challenging and rewarding stage of their lives. I appreciate any suggestions and comments for the success of the group! Q4. What is your advise for female students who are willing to pursue as career women? Experiments never fail. The only source of knowledge is experience.」 I think women have different daily schedules/routines at different life stages. And our priorities change at different stage of life as well. I think it is important for the young professional ladies to practice self-love and acknowledge that they are doing their best at each stage. It is natural for people to often find themselves thinking about their could-haves and should-haves in their past. When that happens to me, I try to remind myself with my favorite quotes: “Experiments never fail.” by Max Elmore “The only source of knowledge is experience.” by Albert Einstein I hope these help for others, too.

DJCW Treasurer & Accountant Akemi Yamashita Q1. Who motivated you to pursue your long-term career? My parents. My mother started working for my father’s business shortly after I started elementary school. Due to both of my parents working, I had to learn how to do things for myself and think for myself. Watching my Mother working outside of home, it began to seem more and more natural for women to work over time. Q2. What made you decide to come to the United States? Marriage. I met my husband when he was Karate practitioner and English teacher in Osaka, Japan. After we were married for 2 years living in Ashiya, Japan, he was accepted into medical school. The school was in Iowa, so we had to move to the U.S. It has been 35 years since that move, and I am still here. Even though it was totally out of my plans for my life, though…. Q3. How would you like to develop DJCW? Many women have previously and successfully established a place for all women in the business world. I hope to pass on their stories and experiences to young women who are coming into work place, and that DJCW will provide the stepping stones for their success. Q4. What is your advise for female students who are willing to pursue as career women? We all know it is difficult to be successful in work place while still raising family, especially for women. However, the era of women choosing work or home is ended. I hope everyone find a good partner to bring out the best of each other and work together to have work/life balance and build their careers.

DJCW Director of Public Relations Anita Fujii Q1. Who motivated you to pursue your long-term career? I was influenced by my parents. My father was more forward-thinking than other men of his generation. He supported my idea of being a career woman for all his life. My mother had been stay-at-home mom after I was born. When I was in middle school, she started working as an accountant at our relative’s hospital. She had no experience in the area and took distant learning classes. She was studying until late at night. She had overtime during first 10 days of every month and was working until midnight while she took care of her family impeccably. Q2. What made you decide to come to the United States? I was back and forth between US and Japan. I spent 6 months in US when I was in the fourth grade because of my father’s work. I spent a year as an exchange student when I was a junior in high school and university. After I graduated from university in Japan, I was working there for three and half years. Then, I studied at a graduate school at Cornell University to achieve my dream at that time and continued living in the US since then. Q3. How would you like to develop DJCW? I would like to support the founders of DJCW, Yuko and Hoshi along with other committee members. I would like to collaborate with working women around the DFW area as well as around the world to empower each other! Q4. What is your advise for female students who are willing to pursue as career women? I believe our society allows us to seek our careers regardless of gender. I hope you will find your work that you feel passionate about and put all your attention on your work and your life.
