8月29日（土）、元フィギュアスケート日本代表でオリンピアンの村主章枝さんをゲストスピーカーにお迎えし、JCWイベント「世界で戦んで学んだ『伝える力』と『自分らしく働く力』」を開催しました。

今回の会場は、ダラス・フォートワース日米協会（JASDFW）のご厚意によりご提供いただきました。当日は総勢34名の皆さまにご参加いただき、会場は終始和やかな雰囲気に包まれました。

冒頭では開催のご挨拶とJCWの活動紹介に続き、参加者の皆さんにも簡単な自己紹介をしていただきました。お名前や職業に加え、「ダラスに住んで何年ですか？」「英語で一言、自分を表現すると？」といった質問にもお答えいただき、参加者同士が互いを知るきっかけとなる、和やかな時間となりました。

その後は、村主さんに「伝える力」と「自分らしく働く力」をテーマに、さまざまな質問をさせていただきました。

「アメリカで新たな挑戦を始めるにあたり、これまでの成功体験を手放してリセットするにはどうしたのか」

「海外で感じた見えない壁や、孤独とどのように向き合ってきたのか」

「『女性だから』と言われた経験」

「異文化の環境の中で、自分らしさ（日本人らしさ）を残すために大切にしていること」

など、一つひとつの質問に、村主さんはご自身の経験を交えながら丁寧にお話しくださいました。

特に「自分らしさ」（日本人らしさ）についてのお話では、茶道の心にも触れられ、競技生活から現在のアメリカでの活動まで、さまざまな経験を通して培われた考え方を伺うことができました。

また、会場からもいくつか質問が寄せられ、参加者の皆さんが積極的に村主さんとの対話を楽しむ姿が見られました。

イベントの最後には、村主さんを囲んで歓談したり、一緒に記念撮影をしたりと、参加者の皆さんとの交流も深まり、笑顔の絶えないひとときとなりました。

今回のイベントを通して、世界という舞台で挑戦を続けてきた村主さんの言葉から、「伝えること」や「自分らしくあること」、そして新しい環境で一歩を踏み出す勇気について、多くの気づきや刺激をいただくことができました。

お忙しい中、JCWのイベントにゲストスピーカーとしてご参加くださり、貴重なお話を聞かせてくださった村主章枝さんに、心より感謝申し上げます。

On Saturday, August 29, JCW was honored to welcome Fumie Suguri, former member of Japan’s national figure skating team and Olympian, as our guest speaker for an inspiring conversation on “The Power of Communication and the Courage to Be Yourself: Lessons from Competing on the World Stage.”

We were grateful to the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth (JASDFW) for generously providing the venue. With 34 participants in attendance, the event was filled with meaningful conversations, new connections, and a warm sense of community.

Following opening remarks and an introduction to JCW, participants had the opportunity to introduce themselves. Along with their names and professions, they shared how long they had lived in Dallas and even described themselves in one word in English. This fun and interactive activity helped everyone get to know one another and set a relaxed tone for the afternoon.

The highlight of the event was an engaging conversation with Ms. Suguri. We asked her about her experiences starting a new chapter in the United States, including how she let go of past successes and embraced the challenge of starting over.

We also explored topics such as:

• Navigating the invisible barriers and loneliness that can come with living abroad

• Her experiences of being told, “Because you are a woman”

• How to stay true to yourself and your Japanese identity in a multicultural environment

  
  

Ms. Suguri shared her thoughts openly and thoughtfully, drawing from her experiences both as an elite athlete and as a Japanese woman building a new life and career in the United States.

When discussing the importance of staying true to oneself, she also shared insights inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony (sado) and the values it represents. Her reflections offered a unique perspective on identity, resilience, and finding one’s own path.

The audience also had the opportunity to ask questions, making the conversation even more interactive and personal. The event concluded with participants gathering around Ms. Suguri to continue chatting, take photos, and connect with one another. The room remained filled with smiles and lively conversation until the very end.

We are deeply grateful to Fumie Suguri for taking time from her busy schedule to join the JCW community and share her experiences and insights. Her story reminded us that our past accomplishments do not define our future—and that embracing change, communicating authentically, and staying true to ourselves can open the door to new possibilities.
